Almost everyone in Can You Hear the Drums Fernando was named after someone. For your reading pleasure, I have attached a list of the characters, and who the inspiration was.
Fernando Torres- Well, it was Fernando Torres.
Ruud Vennegoor of Hesselink- Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Dutch legend, past Manchester United striker and currently at Real Madrid. He was my first favourite soccer player, and a big reason that I love the Dutch.
The name Vennegoor of Hesselink- Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, the Dutch international (sometimes) and striker for the Celtics
Annie Cartwright, Amsterdam sex shop owner- Jill's main character in her novel
Wesley, Olga's cousin- Wesley Sneijder, Dutch international, current midfielder at Real Madrid, and scorer of this beaut (1:30) at Euro 2008 against Italy.
Uncle Dirk- Dirk Kuyt, Dutch international, midfielder at Liverpool, who often draws comparisons that that monster/person in the Goonies.
Rafael, a random high school boy that Olga met at a house party in Rotterdam- Rafael van der Vaart, Dutch international (noticing a trend) and plays for Real Madrid (although probably not for long)
Edwin, another random boy she met at that same party- Edwin van der Sar, former Dutch international goalkeeper (just retired) and current goalkeeper for Manchester United
Cesc Torres, Fern Dawg's father- Cesc Fabregas, the spitter himself
Caleb Annerire, werewolf and literature student at Sorbonne- Caleb from the Covenant, played by Steven Strait
Tim O'Shea/Tim Higgins/Slim O'Flea- Tim Riggins, played by Taylor Kitsch. Okay, so I really like the character
Pogue Pierre, werewolf, also a student at Sorbonne, really attentive in class- Pogue Perry from the Covenant, also played by Taylor Kitsch... Okay, so I really like the actor
Bastian Schweinsteiger, German boy she gets stuck in the Bram Stoker Museum with- Bastian Schweinsteiger, German international and midfielder for Bayern Munich... I think I initially liked him just for his name, but now, he is the reason I want to get a heart rate monitor
Marco Camoranesi, creepy Italian- Mauro Camoranesi, Italian international and Juventus midfielder... I don't really care about him either way, I just think that his name is fantastic
So basically I watched Euro and then named every character after someone I liked there. Or, after Tim Riggins/Pogue Perry because Jill and I watched The Covenant every other weekend.

Because Jill and I WATCH the Covenant every other weekend. It's Covenant season again, baby, and I'm ready when you are to resume our Covenant watching ways. Maybe I'll even watch the whole thing without fast forwarding...
