I know that we aren't supposed to plan until a week before NaNoWriMo, but since I am a two-time winner, I think that I can write my own rules. Additionally, I actually have time to do some planning right now since I am not working and the World Cup isn't on.
So here is my main character, Sadie Desman, in ten questions or less:
1. How old are they?
I think that it will cover my main character between her 20th and 21st year of life
2. What is their gender?
Female
3. What do they do for work?
My main character is a student a Wellesley in Boston, so she mostly does that. In the summer, she will work at a candy shoppe that is yet to be named.
4. Who are their friends, family, and love interests?
Most important to the plot is her love interest, Brett. He plays soccer at Harvard, is in business, is cocky, kind of a d-bag, and emotionally withholding. They will date for a long time, and the book is exploring how she deals with the break-up. There will be many other love interests throughout the book that she dates after Brett, and they will all be horrifying.
Friends: I don't really feel like dealing with this, I know that she will have roommates who will play a big role in her getting over Brett through their sage advice, but that is about it.
Family won't really play a role
5. What is their living space like?
A small apartment in Boston, with two roommates. No, they will not be Haley and Manta. Perhaps one of them will have a pink housecoat with frogs on it, though.
6. What are their hobbies?
Sadie loves watching football, and yes, she is a Liverpool fan. Brett is a Chelsea fan, which is how they will meet. I'm not really sure what she likes to do other than that. I looked up common hobbies on Wikipedia, and they were all really lame (things like scale modeling, dioramas, fishkeeping) so I don't think that my character should have many hobbies.
7. What were they doing a year ago? Five years ago?
A year ago, Sadie was helping Hillary Clinton campaign in the democratic primary. Five years ago she was in high school. I don't really want to talk about what she was up to in high school.
8. What are their values and politics?
Sadie is a feminist, but at the same time has some traditional values that she has trouble reconciling. Love is a big priority in her life.

I think there should be a long description of your roommate's frog housecoat. I also think her name should be Julia/Julio.
ReplyDeleteSeconded! People will think you made it up à la all the other outfits in your novels but actually, it's REAL.
ReplyDeleteSweet shoppe name suggestion:
Pour Some Sugar On Me? I'll try to think of some more....
Also, I know you said you're not going to focus on the friends, but keep the Bechdel Test in mind:
